Filezilla

Filezilla allows you to transfer files from one computer via another computer using File Transfer Protocol.

FileZilla is a fast and reliable FTP client and server with lots of useful features and an intuitive interface. It offers a secure connection making your downloads safer. If you are using a Microsoft based operating system, more than likely you will need to download the .exe (32-bit Windows) application.

Putty

Putty is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix Platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator. 

Putty allows you  to have a server in another location acting as if you were standing in front of the server. Putty is more secure then the Microsoft telnet program. It is NOT wise to use telnet, since information can be seen as data is transferred.

ALWIL offers anti-virus protection FREE for Home Users. It is essential to have a virus detection program. 

avast! Home Edition is now free of charge for HOME users for NON-COMMERCIAL use. You can find more information here. If you are not a home user, or you use your computer for profit, the avast! Home Edition is not licensed for such use, and you are asked to use the commercial version - avast! Professional Edition.

We have used Avast for several months now and have not experienced any strange programming issues. In the past we have noticed some anti-virus acting strangely, either we have found threads on forums asking why a particular anti virus is placing files in folders or difficuting in removing the program.
